It’s New Years Eve! A bunch of us were hanging out at Alvin and Mark’s place. I had forgotten my DSLR , so my phone had to suffice. I wanted to get a picture right before midnight as everyone was gathering around with their champagne. But as it was getting closer to midnight, people moved away from the living room towards the kitchen, out of view of the picture I wanted to take. There wasn’t really much time to setup a shot consider it was 11:59 and I needed a picture, so this is what I got. There are far fewer people in the shot than I was hoping to get, but oh well.

This is definitely not a picture I’m proud of. But I am a little proud of what’s in it. Lol, I now own an iron and ironing board for the first time ever! I didn’t like how boring the ironing board was, so I decided to spice it up a bit by making my own cover for it. It was super simple. I just had to cut the fabric in the shape of the board and create a casing for drawstring.

For Christmas, my older sister got me various flower bulbs. :) This is an amaryllis papillio butterfly bulb. In about 2 months it’s going to be a beautiful flower!

Molbak’s was having a 50% off poinsetta sale over the weekend. I don’t know what it is, but I’m just a sucker for plants… I had to buy one. Not much more to say here.

Today, BJ and I headed to Stevens Pass. While the day started out a bit rainy, it soon enough turned into snow. And the the snowflakes got bigger and bigger. It got to a point that I was covered in snow every time I got off the lift.

I actually did take my point’n’shoot skiing. But with all the snow, every time I took my hands out of the gloves, they would get wet, which means they would go back into the gloves, wet. Basically, I got to a point where I didn’t want to take my hands out of the gloves anymore.

After skiing everything I had on was drenched. Here is the aftermath. All my gear is laying on the ground. I’m hoping it will dry out soon enough.

Today, I decided to not be lazy! I baked cookies! Not just any kind of cookies, I made oreos from scratch.

Here is one cookie. I placed it on a plain white plate for the background. I turned on as many lights as I could. Then, with a little post processing, I enhanced the brown a little so you can see the cracks and whatnot in the cookie.

It was a really good recipe from the Smitten Kitchen blog. There are lots of good recipes here.

Gizmodo is having this shooting challenge. The challenge was to take an xray of your presents. The idea is to take a picture of the gift while it’s wrapped. And then take another one of the unwrapped gift, but in the same spot. Then, you’re supposed to take the photos and merge them together somehow – so that it looks like you’re taking an xray of the gift, and can see what’s inside.

So I tried… first I took a picture of the wrapped gift (above). Then I took a picture of the gift, unwrapped. I used my tripod, and tried to keep the lighting the same. But when I tried to merge the two… I don’t know what it is. I just can’t seem to get it to even look remotely decent. So instead, we’re sticking with this as my picture of the day.

UPDATE (12/30): I decided to try again. To get the xray thing to work. It’s no where near as good as some of the submissions to Gizmodo… but at least I didn’t give up? So, above, you can see the xray version.

Today, Wilk and I went skiing! It was our first time to Stevens this season. Overall, it was a good day. There were even peeks of sunshine throughout the day. At the top of one of the lifts, we had this awesome view of the peaks of the other mountains. I tried to take a panorama shot of the scene, because it was so pretty. And then I used photoshop and the cloning tools to stitch together the seams of the pictures. I think it turned out pretty decently.

Tonight, I wandered off to the Bellevue Botanical Gardens to see their lights display. It was really neat, but a bit crowded. They had this trellis area with lights hanging down. I brought out my tripod, set it up, and set the camera to a various different shutter speeds and then started to click away. I ended up liking this the best. It has clarity in the lights, but with the longer shutter speed, all you see are the ghosts of people as they walk through.

Notes about the photos: You can see the entire set of photos on my flickr page. Pictures titled “India 24”, “India 25”, “India 43″ through “India 53″, “India 67”, Day 328, Day 330, and Day 331 cover this post. The pictures on flickr go into more detail about the trip than here in the blog post.

These photos are some of the random ones that I didn’t know how to group.
